When choosing a hive, the key question is the frame standard — frames, extractor and other equipment all depend on it.

Dadant

A Dadant hive has a larger brood frame, with shallower supers for honey. It is widespread in Georgia, so frames and accessories are easy to find.

Langstroth

A Langstroth hive consists of equal-size boxes stacked on top of each other. Identical frames in every box are convenient and boxes are easy to swap.

Tips

  • Use one standard across your whole apiary so that frames and boxes are interchangeable.
  • Before buying an extractor, check that its cassettes fit your frame size.
  • If you are just starting, choose the standard most common in your region.
