Starting beekeeping does not require much equipment, but some items are essential — for the bees and for your safety.
Essentials
- A hive with frames — choose one standard (e.g. Dadant) and build your whole apiary on it.
- Protective clothing — a veil or jacket with veil, and gloves.
- A smoker — smoke calms the bees and makes inspections easier.
- A hive tool — to separate frames and clean the hive.
- A bee brush — to gently brush bees off a frame.
- A feeder — for feeding, especially in spring and autumn.
Later on
As your apiary grows you will need an uncapping fork or knife, a honey extractor and honey containers. There is no need to buy everything at once.
